Slate blue-gray with a straight-edged anal fin (channel catfish have a rounded one) and no spots — the largest of North America's catfish species.

Where It's Found

Large rivers and reservoirs, especially in the Mississippi, Missouri, and mid-Atlantic river systems, where it can grow past 100 pounds.

Fishing Notes

Heavy tackle and cut bait fished on the bottom near river channel edges is the standard approach for trophy-sized fish.
